Who's your Caddy?

Who’s your caddy???

This week is the PGA Championship (also known as the fourth MAJOR).

But who is playing? Adam, Rickie, Rory, Dustin, Ernie, Charl, Louis, Phil or will it be…

"The old joke is when the player plays good the caddie says, 'we,' but when the player plays bad, the caddie says 'he.' In this case the player played great and the caddie said 'I.' " …former PGA Champion and Ryder Cup Captain, Paul Azinger following Steve Williams WIN at last week’s World Championships"

Steve Williams (now just known as Stevie), Joe (Skovron), Rickie caddy, JP Fitzgerald, Rory’s man on the bag, Joe LaCava, Dustin Johnson’s guy (who after towing the bag for Freddie Couples for years will probably “assist” and keep Dustin focused enough to win Majors), Fluff, on Furyk’s bag and Jim, always talking-“Bones” McKay, Phil’s lifetime right hand will NOT be swinging the club in this week’s PGA Championship played at The Atlanta Athletic Club. August in Atlanta may not produce rain overhead – but it will probably be coming up from underneath – the humidity there now compares to Durban in February!

Maybe this week, the golf will stay focused on the player swinging the club and not the one handing it to him. I’m over the Tiger and Stevie show – actually, I have been over the Tiger show for a long time. If he returns to greatness…great. Until then, I am absolutely loving the Leader boards of late – largely made up of the next generation of younger mentors for our juniors – Adam Scott probably did benefit from SW’s wisdom and knowledge of the course he helped Tiger win so many times on. But it was ADAM who swung the club.

The Rory’s, Rickie, Ryo’s, Charl’s, Louis’ and Luke’s are playing leading roles in golf and it is fun to watch – AGAIN. Thanks Ernie, thanks Lee, thanks Darren and Phil – don’t leave the scene! As a matter of fact, I’ll be backing you know who again, as usual; but this week the last MAJOR of the year, a year that has produced yet another South Africa Champion and TWO from Northern Ireland (Norn Iron).

Take note of the yardages from 14 to 18! My pick for this week will have to “seal the deal” by playing the closing holes well…I hope the last five holes at The Atlanta Athletic Club bring out the best in the players and another great champion will raise the massive Wanamaker Trophy.

Champions for St Francis Links (and great Contributors to St Francis Bay)…a little salute to Richard Arderne!

Note: Over the past weeks, I have seen many, many good people show fantastic community spirit – from the fire team to the NSRI to the people in the press, Johann, Esti and Bev (keeping us abreast of the “culvert” and the “causeway”) to the unsung hero’s who are simply trying to promote our great town, like the Warren’s from Tourism and others, frankly, like us!

Richard Arderne, from Pam Golding, probably wasn’t (in his own words) the biggest fan of estate living, seeing that so many estates, primarily those who featured second home investment, were battling financially. Yet, it is not in his demeanor to be negative about anything. Maybe, part of the reason is because he is committed to St Francis Bay and all it stands for. Outside his role as principal agent of the local Pam Golding office, he is also a sportsman, staying as young as his kids by running (as he did in the 27km event yesterday), paddling, surfing and occasionally golfing – usually in an event that Pam Golding is sponsoring – and they sponsor plenty in this town. Whether Pam Golding is putting up the cash, paying for an ad or prizes or whether Richard is donating time and labour, there has been a significant effort made and benefit received. We, at St Francis Links, join forces with Richard in many events – from hosting the Pam Golding ANNUAL in the holiday period to the successful staging the MTB Challenge – a mountain bike race that starts and finishes here where we can accommodate more than 500 participants and supporters each year.

My reason for highlighting Richard today is because he has made a real effort in communicating with our property owners with regard their investment here at the Links. It is a fact that some of our investors did so with the desire to buy and sell for profit. The economic downturn has put property speculators in a bad spot all over the world. Richard has made the effort to contact his clients, to assess their needs and made solid recommendations based on our continued financial success. WE ARE DIFFERENT to other estates in that 1) we are located in a community, St Francis Bay, that in fact, while separated at times from the mainland, is not going away, 2) we present a solid, safe and secure lifestyle in a beautiful community and 3) we continue to grow financially with Club profits and HOA reserves (for major replacement and repair over R4M). Richard, with Ryan Dodds’ help, has produced a list of properties that represent real opportunities to be a part of the Links – aiding those who speculated and cannot stay in the market – replacing them, many last year, with ‘Members’ who will benefit from being a part of the Links family!

I am not trying to alienate those of you who are also promoting the properties on the Links – just thanking one who has already made a difference. Cheers, Richard (and your team)

The MTB Challenge scheduled for 4 September has also been effected by the recent heavy rains and is being rescheduled for later in the year. Watch this space!
