An eventful first month...

It has been an eventful first month for me at the links and one that I have learnt a lot from. I can honestly say that I couldn’t have asked for better people around me to make my move from George to St Francis a smooth transition. Each individual on the maintenance side has the capability and the knowledge to lead their teams and ensure that the whole structure falls in place at the right time.

We are preparing for hollow tining in August and getting everything in place to get the work done and get the putting surface back to normal in the fastest possible time. After all the rain, and hopefully its done for now, we can get our focus back on the course and the maintenance of it. There is still a lot of surface water on the 2nd and 3rd hole and we are trying to get rid of this water as quickly as we can to prevent any loss of turf.

What came along with the weather we have been experiencing where the ideal growing conditions for Poa Annua, and this is the grass that we are trying to keep out of the greens. What we are doing to control this is to spray products that stop seed production and not physically kill the plant. We also have staff hand weeding these plants on the greens on a constant basis.

I am happy to announce that Danisile (My Assistant) is in his last week of the turfgrass management course being held in George and we wish him all the best for the final exam. The maintenance facilities are getting organised to ensure an easier and smoother workspace and also to ensure that our facility reflects directly on the quality of work being done on the golf course. I am busy finding my feet around the course and I must thank all members that have taken the time to make me feel right at home. My family came on Saturday and I will gladly introduce you all to my wife and two daughters when we see you around.

Happy golfing and I suppose I must say…keep it out of the wet stuff rather than keep it out of the rough?

Regards,
Charl
